The Shwedagon Pagoda, also known as the Great Dagon Pagoda and the Golden Pagoda, is a gilded stupa located in Yangon, Myanmar. The 326-foot-tall pagoda is situated on Singuttara Hill, and dominates the Yangon skyline. Historians and archaeologists maintain that the pagoda was built by the Mon people between the 6th and 10th centuries AD.
I visited this complex with my friend Philip and was immediately taken with the architecture. All the multiple pagodas (which represent 'holy mountains' in Buddhist culture), rise out of the ground and form interesting shapes against the skyline. I found the way the palm interacts visually with this singular pagoda really appealing. Almost like a tall and short friend standing together.
