Along State Highway 3's rolling hills of South Taranaki stands Tutahi Church at Nukumaru - south of Waitotara. It is built on the site of the Tauranga Iki Pa where Riwha Titokowaru’s last battle was abandoned on 2 February 1869. It is a significant and spiritual place for Maori.
It is thought to have been built about 1870 and is a classic example of colonial (mixed with a Maori influence) architecture.
I love it because it's slightly out of the way and easy to miss on this stretch of road when you're going 100 km/h. It's a tranquil place, sitting peacefully amongst Pohutukawa trees. It makes an excellent photo against a cloudy sky.
